Meditation is indeed extremely popular these days with everyone, regardless of age, gender, social status or even religion. For some reason, meditation has picked up in the Western world and it seems that it is here to stay. But why is meditation so popular, what made it so even with people who are entirely materialistic and don’t really believe in spirituality at all? Or even worse, some religions are against spirituality, yet people embracing that religion also embrace meditation.
Retired people, baby boomers, teenagers, busy managers and career women, everyone is meditating – or at least is trying to learn how to. Based on a survey done in 2005, it seems that almost 1/3 of the US population is actually meditating every day. With the growing population in the US, that counts for millions and millions of people across the entire country.
The reason why everyone turns to meditation when everything else fails is because it works. Plain and simple. But just what makes meditation ‘work’? Let’s look at a few different aspects and benefits and see if it could be something for you as well. People are practicing meditation for their own reasons, and believe it or not, these reasons might be completely different reasons (and sometimes even conflicting) from your own.
For example some people meditate because they seek spiritual enlightenment, also called Nirvana.
Other people meditate because it works in reducing the extreme stress they feel every day at work, at home, due to money problem or relationship issues. Yet others meditate simply to relax and unwind after a hard day’s work.
